National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2025: What You Need to Know About September 30

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2025: Understanding September 30's Significance Across Canada

Quick Facts: The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed September 30. Tuesday Sept. 30 is Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, a day dedicated to honouring those affected by the residential school system.

Key Takeaways

  • The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (sometimes shortened to T&R Day) (NDTR), originally and still colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, is a Canadian day of memorial to recognize the atrocities and multi-generational effects of the Canadian Indian residential school system. It occurs every year on September 30.
  • Canada designated Sept. 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2021 and has observed it as a federal statutory holiday ever since.
  • Only four provinces/territories will grant all workers the day off.

What is Truth and Reconciliation Day?

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission ran from 2008 to 2015 and provided those directly or indirectly affected by the legacy of the residential schools policy with an opportunity to share their stories and experiences. The Commission released its final report detailing 94 calls to action. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, which called for a federal statutory day of commemoration.

Is Truth and Reconciliation Day a Statutory Holiday?

Truth and Reconciliation Day is a federal holiday on which postal workers, federal government staffers, and bank employees are given the day off. However, the statutory holiday status varies significantly across provinces:

Provinces Where It IS a Statutory Holiday:

  • British Columbia: B.C. — where the day has been a statutory holiday since 2023. On March 9, 2023, the Province of British Columbia passed legislation to make September 30 a statutory holiday. Enshrining National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in B.C. law gives more people the chance to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system on September 30 each year.
  • Prince Edward Island: Sept. 30 is a statutory holiday for all workers in PEI. Canada's smallest province recognizes Truth and Reconciliation as a holiday and will close schools and government offices.
  • Manitoba: In 2023, the government designated Sept. 30 as Orange Shirt Day, a provincial statutory holiday under the Employment Standards Code.
  • Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon: As of March 2023, NDTR is a statutory holiday for: federal government employees and private-sector employees to whom the Canada Labour Code applies; provincial government employees in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. all workers in British Columbia, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon.

Provinces Where It is NOT a Provincial Statutory Holiday:

  • Ontario: Sept. 30 will not be a statutory holiday in Ontario. Like many other provinces, employers may agree to give staff the day off, especially if it is required by collective agreements.
  • Alberta: The Alberta government has not designated Sept. 30 a statutory holiday, leaving the decision on whether workers have the day off up to employers. However, the province does commemorate the day as a "direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 80, which called for a day to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools."
  • Saskatchewan: Sept. 30 is not a statutory holiday in Saskatchewan, either. "The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 is a statutory holiday for employees in federally regulated workplaces. It is not a public holiday under The Saskatchewan Employment Act, therefore it is not a minimum requirement to provincially regulated employers and employees"
  • Quebec: Sept. 30 is not a provincial holiday in Québec.
  • Nova Scotia: Nova Scotia officially recognizes Sept. 30 as a holiday. "Provincial government offices, public schools, and regulated childcare will be closed on Truth and Reconciliation Day," reads a release from the province. However, Truth and Reconciliation Day is not one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code, notes the province.
  • New Brunswick: The provincial government has not designated Truth and Reconciliation Day a holiday, but city governments in Moncton and Fredericton have given municipal workers the day off.

What's Closed on Truth and Reconciliation Day 2025?

Federal Services (Nationwide):

  • Canada Post: Canada Post will not be picking up or delivering mail, and all post offices will be closed.
  • Banks: Bank branches are generally closed.
  • Federal Government Offices: Broadly speaking, federal government employees will get Tuesday off.

Provincial and Municipal Services (varies by location):

In provinces where it's a statutory holiday:

  • All provincial government office will be closed, including Access P.E.I. and public libraries. (PEI)
  • The city will close its client service centres, employment and social service offices, municipal child-care centres, Site program, dental clinics and sexual health centres Tuesday. (Ottawa)

Retail and Services:

  • LCBO (Ontario): LCBOs will open at noon.
  • Grocery Stores: Most grocery stores will be open and operating on regular hours.
  • Shopping Malls: Most malls, including Yorkdale Shopping Centre, will remain open on Tuesday.
  • Museums: The agriculture, aviation, history, science and war museums are open and offering free admission, as is the National Gallery of Canada, which opens at noon. The history and war museums are open two hours later until 7 p.m.

Orange Shirt Day: The Connection

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. Orange Shirt Day is a commemorative day led by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools on children, families, and communities. It honours Indigenous children who were lost in the residential school system. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced.

Historical Context: Residential Schools in Canada

There were 140 federally run residential schools in Canada that operated between 1867 and 1996. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, established to document the effects of the residential school system, ran from 2008 to 2015, and concluded that the attempt to forcefully assimilate Indigenous communities was a cultural genocide.

How to Observe Truth and Reconciliation Day

Canadian Heritage has funded 340 events and gatherings across the country in 2025. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation offers a free virtual educational program from September 22-26, 2025, to all schools across Canada.

The event will be broadcast live from Parliament Hill, starting at 3 p.m. (ET) on the APTN channel and on several major television and radio networks.

Support Resources:

Former residential school students can call 1-866-925-4419 for emotional crisis referral services and information on other health supports from the Government of Canada. Indigenous peoples across Canada can also go to The Hope for Wellness Help Line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for counselling and crisis intervention. Call the toll-free Help Line at 1-855-242-3310 or connect to the online chat (Please use Google Chrome).

Whether you have the day off or not, take time to learn about Indigenous history, culture, and the lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities across Canada.

Bengals vs Broncos Week 17 Thriller: Joe Burrow's Overtime Magic Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Bengals vs Broncos Week 17 Thriller: Joe Burrow's Overtime Magic Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Bengals vs Broncos Week 17 Showdown: Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins Deliver Overtime Drama at Paycor Stadium

Final Score: Cincinnati Bengals 30, Denver Broncos 24 (OT)

In one of the most thrilling games of the 2024 NFL season, Joe Burrow threw his third touchdown pass to Tee Higgins with 1:07 left in overtime, and the Bengals kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a wild 30-24 win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday. The December 28 matchup at Paycor Stadium showcased why the Bengals remain one of the most dangerous teams in the league when healthy.

Joe Burrow's Record-Setting Performance

The Bengals quarterback continued his remarkable 2024 campaign with another stellar showing. Burrow continued his stellar season, going 39 for 49 for 412 yards and three touchdowns, all to Higgins. Even more impressive, Burrow has at least 250 yards passing and three touchdowns in eight straight games, extending his NFL record.

"I don't know that anybody can stand on the field and watch Joe Burrow and say he's not the best player in the world," Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. The praise is well-deserved after Burrow orchestrated multiple crucial drives to keep Cincinnati's postseason dreams alive.

Tee Higgins Steals the Spotlight

While Ja'Marr Chase grabbed headlines all season with his triple crown achievement, it was Tee Higgins who delivered when it mattered most. Had season-high 11 catches for 131 yards and three TDs on Dec. 28 vs. Denver, including three-yard game-winning TD with 1:07 left in overtime; posted first career three-TD game in win over Broncos.

Higgins finished with 11 receptions for 131 yards, proving once again why the Bengals' receiving duo is among the NFL's most feared. His chemistry with Burrow was evident throughout the contest, especially on the game-winning play where he found the perfect spot in the end zone.

Denver's Missed Opportunity

The Broncos (9-7) would have secured an AFC wild card with a victory over the Bengals. They'll have another opportunity to earn a postseason berth when they host Kansas City next weekend. A victory over the Chiefs also would eliminate the Bengals.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix showed resilience for Denver, finishing 24 for 31 for 219 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Mims finished with eight catches for 103 yards and two TDs. His connection with Marvin Mims Jr. kept the Broncos competitive, including a spectacular 25-yard touchdown pass to a leaping Marvin Mims Jr. for the tying score with 8 seconds left in regulation.

Key Moments and Turning Points

Regulation Drama

Burrow's 1-yard touchdown run gave Cincinnati a 24-17 lead with 1:29 left in regulation. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Chase Brown hurt his right ankle on an awkward slide while going down in an effort to help the Bengals run out the remaining time, stopping the clock and giving Denver one final chance.

Overtime Heroics

The overtime period featured multiple momentum swings. Cade York had a chance to win it for Cincinnati with about three minutes left in overtime, but his 33-yard field goal bounced off the left upright. This gave Denver life, but Denver then went three-and-out, including a Bo Nix incompletion on third down, handing the ball right back to Burrow and the Bengals (8-8).

When the Bengals got the ball back, Burrow delivered. After Denver's second punt in overtime, Burrow completed a 31-yard pass to Higgins to the Denver 3, and then went back to the lanky receiver for the final play in Cincinnati's fourth consecutive victory.

Supporting Cast Contributions

Chase Brown's Impact

Before his injury, Chase Brown provided crucial support in the running game, helping the Bengals control the clock and maintain offensive balance. His unfortunate injury in the final minutes nearly cost Cincinnati the game but ultimately set up one of the season's most dramatic finishes.

Mike Gesicki's Career Night

TE Mike Gesicki tied his career high with 10 catches for 86 yards. His previous 10-catch game occurred in Week 3 of the 2021 season at Las Vegas, when he played for Miami. Gesicki's reliable hands provided Burrow with a safety valve throughout the contest.

Courtland Sutton and Denver's Passing Attack

For the Broncos, Courtland Sutton remained a consistent threat, while Marvin Mims Jr. emerged as the game's breakout star with his two touchdown catches, including the dramatic game-tying score.

Playoff Implications and What's Next

It was the Bengals' first win this season against a team with a winning record. They need another victory in their final game at Pittsburgh and some help from other teams to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2022.

The path is clear but challenging for both teams:

  • Cincinnati Bengals (8-8): Must defeat Pittsburgh in Week 18 and need Denver to lose to Kansas City
  • Denver Broncos (9-7): Can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Kansas City in Week 18

Looking Ahead

"We know we can hang with anybody," Burrow said. "We've proven that this year. We played everybody this year close. It's just about making the plays down the stretch to win those games. Today we did. The last four weeks we have. We've got to continue to do it."

The Bengals have won four straight games when it matters most, showcasing the resilience that has defined their season. With Joe Burrow playing at an MVP level and weapons like Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase at his disposal, Cincinnati remains dangerous heading into their season finale.

For Denver, the loss stings but doesn't end their season. The young Broncos team, led by rookie Bo Nix, has shown tremendous growth throughout 2024. Their playoff fate now rests in their own hands against the Chiefs.

Final Thoughts

Saturday night's Bengals vs Broncos matchup delivered everything NFL fans could hope for: dramatic lead changes, clutch performances, and overtime heroics. Joe Burrow's connection with Tee Higgins proved to be the difference-maker, while both teams demonstrated why they deserve consideration for the AFC playoffs.

As Week 18 approaches, the stakes couldn't be higher. The Bengals must continue their hot streak in Pittsburgh, while the Broncos face the daunting task of defeating the Chiefs at home. One thing is certain: both teams have shown they belong in the conversation among the AFC's elite.

Alberta Teachers Strike: 89.5% Reject Deal, Province-Wide Strike Set for October 6

Alberta Teachers Strike: 89.5% Reject Deal, Province-Wide Strike Set for October 6

Alberta Teachers Strike: Breaking News on Historic Vote Results and October 6 Deadline

Update September 29, 2025: Alberta teachers have overwhelmingly denied the province's tentative agreement with 89.5 per cent of voters against the deal. Of 43,362 votes cast, 89.5 per cent were opposed to the deal and 10.5 per cent supported it. This decisive rejection sets the stage for a province-wide teacher strike beginning October 6, 2025, affecting all public, Catholic, and Francophone schools across Alberta.

Strike Vote Results: A Clear Message from Alberta Teachers

The Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) announced the results Monday evening, with results posted on the ATA website by 6:00 PM on Monday, September 29. "I'm not surprised," ATA president Jason Schilling said at a news conference held in Edmonton Monday evening. "Teachers in this province have been asked to do more with less time and time again."

This rejection follows months of failed negotiations and represents "The magnitude of this strike would be unprecedented, in both the education sector and provincial labour history," according to ATA fact sheets sent to members.

Timeline of Events Leading to Strike

  • May 2025: Nearly 36,000 of Alberta's 51,000 teachers represented by the ATA cast a vote, with 62 per cent voting against the deal.
  • June 5-8, 2025: 94.5% (36,862 teachers) voted in favour of authorizing strike action.
  • September 10, 2025: ATA President Jason Schilling held a press conference announcing that, if an agreement is not reached, the ATA will begin a labour action (strike) on Monday, October 6.
  • September 24, 2025: A tentative agreement was reached between ATA and TEBA
  • September 29, 2025: Teachers decisively reject the tentative agreement

Key Issues: What Teachers Are Fighting For

1. Fair Wages

At the time, Schilling said the deal failed to address classroom complexities or increasing class sizes, and a 12 per cent wage increase wouldn't make up for inflation over the last decade. Chapman said teachers have received about a five-per cent salary increase in the last decade, while the cost of living has ballooned.

2. Classroom Complexity and Resources

"Teachers are facing large class sizes and a lack of resources, in a school year where Alberta's per-student education funding is among the lowest of all provinces." The recommendation also didn't go far enough to address classroom complexity, which many teachers say is a bigger concern than their pay.

3. Student Support

The Alberta Teachers' Association said it had pressed for substantially larger salary increases and significant enhancements, including limits on class sizes and reduced hours of work.

What Happens During a Strike?

If the strike proceeds on October 6, 2025:

  • All classes will be cancelled. Students will not attend school in person or online. There will be no instruction, supervision, or extracurricular activities during the strike.
  • Teachers, principals, and assistant principals are members of the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) and will participate in the strike.
  • Families and staff should ensure childcare arrangements are in place for Monday, October 6.

Financial Impact on Teachers

Striking teachers would forego their pay of about $480 a day, according to another ATA fact sheet obtained by CBC. The teachers will not get strike pay, and time spent on strike will affect their pensionable income, the fact sheet says.

Government's Position

The provincial government had offered:

  • Three per cent wage increases to teachers in each of four years starting from September 2024.
  • Funding 1,000 net new teaching positions across the province in each of the next three school years, adding a total of 3,000 full-time teachers by 2028.
  • The government would also commit to funding a net new 1,500 educational assistant positions by August 2028.

Jason Schilling's Statement: "We Will Not Remain Silent"

Without fair wages and improved conditions for teachers and students, Alberta risks driving away its most valuable educational resource: its teachers, says Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling. After talks broke down between the ATA and the Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), Schilling said teachers have been firm and unequivocal in saying that the government's latest offer does not recognize the important work teachers do within the public education system, especially when teachers have been disrespected and undervalued for years.

"What we can do now, in this moment, is send a clear message: while we continue to seek resolution at bargaining, we will not continue to tolerate conditions that hinder both teaching and learning," Schilling said. "We will not remain silent as the system is eroded around us."

Impact on Students and Families

If the Alberta Teachers' Association and the provincial government fail to reach an agreement by Oct. 6, education could grind to a halt in the province as 51,000 teachers go on strike. This unprecedented action would affect hundreds of thousands of students across Alberta's public, Catholic, and Francophone school systems.

Despite the effects a strike would have on students and parents, support for teachers has been strong. Student organizations and parent groups have been organizing rallies and demonstrations in support of teachers' demands for better classroom conditions.

Historical Context

Alberta teachers last staged a province-wide strike in 2002. School underfunding and class sizes were flash points in the dispute. The current situation represents the most significant labour action in Alberta's education sector in over two decades.

What's Next?

With the October 6 deadline looming, several scenarios remain possible:

  1. Last-minute negotiations could produce a new agreement
  2. The government could impose back-to-work legislation
  3. The strike could proceed as planned, shutting down schools province-wide

We remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached without disruption to teaching and learning. However, with such a decisive rejection of the latest offer, the path forward remains uncertain.

Stay Updated

For the latest updates on the Alberta teacher strike:

  • Visit the Alberta Teachers' Association website at teachers.ab.ca
  • Check your local school board communications
  • Follow local news outlets for breaking developments

Important Notice for Parents: While we are hopeful that a settlement will be reached before October 6, families should be prepared to make childcare arrangements should a labour action occur.

Conclusion

The overwhelming rejection of the tentative agreement by Alberta teachers sends a clear message about the state of education in the province. With 89.5% voting against the deal, teachers are demonstrating unprecedented unity in their demands for better wages, improved classroom conditions, and adequate resources for students. As October 6 approaches, all eyes are on the negotiating table, hoping for a resolution that benefits teachers, students, and families across Alberta.

Breaking: Tyreek Hill Injury Update

Miami's top receiver is out of the contest and likely the rest of the 2025 NFL season after landing awkwardly on his left leg early in the second quarter. ESPN broadcast replays showed Hill's leg bending out of place as the Pro Bowler went to the ground, and trainers immediately tended to him before he was carted off. Hill had a smile and waved to the home crowd on his way out, but all indications are he suffered a serious injury.

The Dolphins wide receiver, who's been ruled out for the remainder of the game, is on his way to an area hospital for imaging and further evaluation of his leg. He just left Hard Rock Stadium in a wheelchair with a leg brace.

Key Matchup Information

Team Records & Stakes

It's Monday night, which means it's time for Week 4 to come to a close ... but not without a chance for two more AFC East clubs to make some noise. A day after both the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots turned in convincing victories, the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are squaring off at Hard Rock Stadium in a fight to escape the division's cellar and secure win No. 1 of their 2025 NFL season.

Jets Updates

After being without starting quarterback Justin Fields in Week 3 due to a concussion, he'll make his return to the Jets on Monday night. His return is great news for New York, which could use Fields' versatility this week against a Dolphins defense that led the league in points allowed (97) and was one of three defenses that had yet to force a turnover entering Week 4.

Historical Context

Playing at home has certainly been an advantage for the Dolphins in this series as they've won nine straight home matchups with the Jets. All of them have been by more than the spread of 2.5 points as the Dolphins have a 10.4-point average margin of victory during this run.

The tradition began in September 1970 when ABC introduced the concept of a nationally televised game on Monday night, instantly changing the way fans experienced professional football. BREAKING: Tyreek Hill Carted Off Field with Gruesome Knee Injury During Dolphins vs Jets Monday Night Football

Published: September 30, 2025

By Sports News Team

Miami Gardens, FL - Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a gruesome-looking leg injury in the third quarter of Miami's "Monday Night Football" game against the Jets. The injury occurred with 13:21 remaining in the third quarter when Hill caught a 10-yard pass to convert a third-and-8, but as he went to the ground out of bounds, his left leg got caught under him and bent at a very awkward angle.

The Injury: What Happened to Tyreek Hill

Hill immediately grabbed his knee and stayed down on the ground. The training staffs of both teams worked quickly to help Hill, cutting off his cleat and the tape around his ankle/foot area to get his leg into a stabilizer.

Hill's mother reportedly came down to the field to show her support as medical staff attended to the All-Pro receiver. Multiple Dolphins and Jets players shook Hill's hand or tapped him on the head as he was taken off the field, and the receiver waved to the crowd and clapped as he headed into the tunnel.

Tyreek Hill Stats Before Injury

Prior to his injury, Hill had six catches for 67 yards in the game. The Dolphins led 10-3 at the time of the injury.

2025 Season Statistics

  • Through three contests in 2025, he's hauled in 15 of 23 targets for 198 yards and one touchdown
  • Average: 66.0 yards per game
  • 15 receptions on 23 targets

Tyreek Hill Injury Update: Hospital Transport

Miami took Hill to the hospital almost immediately after getting him back to the locker room, with his left leg in a brace and the trainers taking him by wheelchair to the transport. The Dolphins immediately ruled out Hill and said Hill was being taken to a local hospital for imaging, evaluation and observation.

Impact on Dolphins vs Jets Game

A few plays later, tight end Darren Waller hauled in his second touchdown of the night to push Miami's lead to 17-3, giving the Dolphins breathing room in a game dominated by their defense. Miami forced three turnovers after going without one in the first three games of the season.

What This Means for the Dolphins

Losing their star receiver for the season would be terrible for this Dolphins team that has already struggled through the first quarter of the 2025 season. However, the injury makes it unlikely that the Dolphins can trade Hill during the season. The Dolphins might've actually benefitted from moving Hill if the 2025 season continued to go off the rails.

Even if the Dolphins want to trade Hill in the offseason, the price for a 31-year-old receiver (32 when the 2026 season starts) coming off a major injury probably won't be high.
