Release Date: Why the Wait Until 2029?
According to reports from Variety and Bloomberg, Netflix and Sony have officially finalized the deal for the sequel, but the target release date is currently set for 2029. While a four-year gap feels like an eternity in the K-pop world, it is standard for high-end animation.
Co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have emphasized that they want to ensure the quality matches the first film. In a recent interview, Appelhans noted, "We are building imaginary movie stars from scratch. The design and animation take time." So, while we won't get a comeback stage in 2026, the studio is reportedly planning a short film titled Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story to tide fans over.
What Reddit Theories Say About the Ending and Sequel
The r/KpopDemonhunters subreddit has been on fire since the credits rolled. The first movie ended with the creation of a "Rainbow Honmoon"—a barrier that wasn't perfect (Golden) but nuanced, allowing for a coexistence of sorts. This open-ended conclusion has led to some fascinating theories.
Reddit Theory 1: The "Power of Four" and a New Member
One popular thread suggests that the sequel will introduce a fourth member to Huntrix. Reddit user KpopAnalyst99 points out that many real-life K-pop groups evolve by adding members to target global audiences. The theory posits that a non-Korean idol might join the team to reflect the industry's globalization, potentially creating friction with the original trio.
Reddit Theory 2: The Return of Jinu and the Saja Boys
Perhaps the most heated debate on Reddit concerns Jinu, the frontman of the rival demon boy band, the Saja Boys. While his character arc seemed to conclude with a sacrifice, user Sulldognasty argues that Jinu isn't gone for good. The theory is that he is now bound to Rumi’s sword, serving as a spiritual guide or weapon power-up in the sequel. Fans are torn on this—some want him back for the romance, while others think it cheapens his sacrifice.
Cast: Who Is Returning?
While contracts are still being finalized, the main trio is expected to return to the recording booth:
- Arden Cho as Rumi
- May Hong as Mira
- Ji-young Yoo as Zoey
Arden Cho recently posted on Instagram celebrating the film's "Best Animated Feature" win, captioning it "I'll be honestly a little bummed if we can't do a sequel." Thankfully, she won't have to be.

What We Want to See in KPop Demon Hunters 2
The first movie did an incredible job of blending high-octane action with the real struggles of idol life (dating bans, grueling schedules, and, you know, demons). For the sequel, we hope to see more of the "World Tour" aspect. Taking the demon-hunting action to iconic locations like Tokyo, Paris, or Los Angeles would visually expand the universe and allow for some killer new set pieces.
Until 2029, we'll just have to keep streaming the soundtrack. Are you Team Golden or Team Rainbow? Let us know in the comments!
